98' Passport serpentine belt coming off

Hello all, This is a weird deal, My neighbor has a 98 passport (98,000) miles SHE said that the serpentine belt keeps coming off, She took it to the honda dealer and they told her that the Crankshaft of the engine was loose and causing the belt to come off the pulley and she needed a new engine. Well she decided to just by a new car and the Honda is sitting on the street now. I find it hard to believe that this is possible. Maybe the pulley is messed up or something. Any thoughts on this?? I want to try and buy the car for cheap and want to make sure that the engine is not really bad. The whole deal is way fishy.

Re: 98' Passport serpentine belt coming off

maybe not so fishy.
check out this thread that talks about crank walk and the thrust bearing on a rodeo.
sounds the same.
there are probably better posts you can search for , but this is a start.

Re: 98' Passport serpentine belt coming off

I read the thread in that link
The car is a stick so I guess it maybe possible that it has "crankwalk"
Thanks

I put my money here also. I just don't believe that a crank can move in and out far enough to throw a serpentine belt. We're probably talking less than .100 of an inch.

A worn fan pulley could sag on the shaft and easily cause the belt to walk off. Just my .02.

well you're wrong about that. it's when the thrust becomes excessive due to abnormal wear. but it could very well be the fan support bracket in this case.

Define excessive. How much does the crank move in and out? I bet the belt could withstand a significant amount of misalignment and not come off.
The bearing thrust surface can't be more than .100" thick. Even if it completely wore away that is still a very small amount for a multi-rib belt to deal with. This is only my humble opinion and I will be the first to admit when I am wrong. I just find it difficult to believe.

Re: 98' Passport serpentine belt coming off

Be a dick and call the city and tell them its depreciating the value of your home by having this dirty old 98 suv sitting on the road.

Maybe then she will sell it
