Wheel noise

I have a 92 4Runner 4WD w/ manual Xmission, 182K miles. It has just started making a whump-whump-whump kind of noise, not super loud, but noticeable at all speeds. Ride is smooth and braking is good. Noise is not coming from the engine, sounds like it’s coming from the back. Noise slows down when the tires slow down. I had 31x1050-15 (BFG All terrain) tires on it, and they were due for replacement, so I had them (Discount) put on BFG All terrain 30x950-15 on (Save a little gas and I don’t need 31s). I thought that would fix the problem but it didn’t-- same noise, same loudness. Someone suggested replacing all the wheels (they are OEM) but I have never banged them up. Any Ideas? Rear brakes? Mecahnical problem in the back? (I am not too mechanical obviously). Thank you.

Re: Wheel noise

If it gets worse definitely check all the tires. One of mine parted a steel belt inside and created a swollen, weak spot and a noise like you were talking about. That resulted in new tires.

Re: Wheel noise

Could be wheel bearing (although they rarely fail), shoes rubbing the drum, differential, etc.

Put the axle up on jackstands and rotate each tire by hand. Locate the source of the noise by feel and sound, left tire? right tire? differential?, etc.

If it's a tire pull it off and rotate the drum, do you still hear or feel it?
If yes, pull off the drum, and repeat.

Get a service manual to help you.
