96 Grand am Passlock issues????

I own a 96 Grand Am GT and in the past few days the passlock system is acting up. The only thing is i'm not sure what is causing it. My key does not want to turn all the time and i have to wiggle it to get it to turn. Could this be causing the passlock system to fail and if so should i try getting a new key or what other steps could i take?

Welcome to AF.

ITs the lock cylinder, and this will make the security feature interupt your driving.

Re: 96 Grand am Passlock issues????

Should i try getting a new key from the dealer first or should i just have them replace the cylinder?? OH and i forgot to mention that it runs fine once i have it started... it doesn't stall on me or anything and the security light goes off.

I dont think just a new key would help.

You should replace the lock cylinder and it'll come with new keys.

Re: 96 Grand am Passlock issues????

I checked GMpartsdirect and they want $115.23 + $25.35 shipping. This was for an Auto trans.

You probly can get it cheaper at your local stealership, $110-115 for sure , also depends on where you are located geographicly.
