interested in 86-89 4runner v6 for Baja Chase

I would like to get everyones opinion before I purchase a runner. Here is what I will use it for and the reasons it apeals to me. Feel free to shoot me down because I know very little about this truck.

it's primary role will be as a chase truck for SCORE races. It apeals to me because a) the top comes off! b) parts seem to be cheap, and C) the trucks are easy to find and cheap.

I'm not afraid to work on it and would not hesitate to swap the motor if recomended. I live in Mexico so, I can do what ever I want to the motor for power. I would prefer an automatic but if thats a weak spot I'm open to a 5 speed. Is it possible to supercharge this truck? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.

The 3.0 V6 (also known as the 3.slow) is not a shining moment for Toyota engine designers. Not much more HP than the 22RE 4 cyl, worse MPG, Head Gasket problems. But beyond the HG problems it is dependable.

I don't know of any SC unit for it, and doubt it would hold up long under one.

Welcome to the AF!

Consider swapping in a 3.4L 5VZ-FE engine and transmission.

Can be supercharged with little effort.

Re: interested in 86-89 4runner v6 for Baja Chase

Thanks for the welcome and the advice! I now understand why the v6/autos are so cheap!
Can I build a strong 22RE (solid stock) with $1500? Doesn't need to be the fastest, just reliable and a little more umph than stock. I plan on spending the bulk of my dough on suspension, tires, radios, lights etc.
Thanks again for saving my *@$$. I'm glad I looked before I lept!
