Getting Extra/Spare keys

I have a 04 grand prix GT but only have one key and the remote keyless entry which are naturally on the same keychain. Getting a replacment key from my local pontiac dealer is $42 due to the chip inside. I never lose keys but would hate to lock the keys inside of the car. So is there anywhere I could get a key made cheaper then $42 or get one which would just open the doors without a chip inside the key which should make it alot cheaper?

Thanks.

Transponder keys aren't cheap. You may be able to get a blank that matches cut for a few dollars at a hardware, Wal-mart, etc...but it will only work for unlocking the car. A locksmith may be able to come up with a transponder key cheaper than a dealer one, but I'm not sure.

Re: Getting Extra/Spare keys

Don't know if the '04 differs from the '02 in this respect. For the '02, I bought a blank off of Ebay for about $15. Took it to the hardware store to be cut. Brought it home and follow ed the procedure found a multitudenous locations on the web (can probably be found within this forum). First try didn't work. Symptom is that car will start but not stay running. Tried it again and voula, good to go.

Re: Getting Extra/Spare keys

If you need spare keys, just do an ebay search (include details in search) for "transponder pk3". PK3 is the type of key for my 04 GT... Keys here are $45 each (CDN funds) and they want another $50 or so to program it. You can get the key on Ebay for less than $20 shipped, and you can program it yourself.

All you need is 1 original key for the car, and then do the following;
Have your key cut (duh!), test it out on the drivers door to make sure it locks/unlocks, so you know it's cut properly...

Then, once in the drivers seat, place your original key in the ignition, turn to ACC for a few seconds (i waited about 5 secs), then remove it.. Within 10 seconds, place the newly cut key in the ignition, place it to ACC again for 5 secs.. Turn off, turn back on (with same key), and car should start.

It sounds almost too easy to be true, but it works. I bought 2 extra keys for less than $40 CDN, programmed them myself, and now have a spare where I need them.

Hope this helps!
