I have a 1998 4 door cavalier that has failed the emission test. I was given a error code of PO440- something to do with the Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you have any idea as to what the cost of repairing will be. I dont like going to mechanics because i never understand what they are talking about. They always say that I need this or that and most times it is not as critical as they say and the next time i have the car repaired the new mechanic says I didnt really need that

the only time i got this code was when i didnt tighten down my gas cap.. some gas evaporated and triggered the code..

I would check that first.. put some gas in, then tighten down the cap well.. then get someone to clear the code with a scan tool and see if it comes back..

otherwise theres a gas leak or something somewhere..

Thanks, I will try the gas cap thing and see what happens. I would appreciate any other suggestions
