96 safari abs light

My abs light came on. the wires to the sensors on the front wheels are in tact. I read that there is a rear one. Could that be the problem? My wife baja-ed through a ditch right before this happened. Maybe a loose connection or broken wire somewhere underneath?

Re: 96 safari abs light

When the ABS lamp is illuminated, the ABS portion of the brakes is inoperative. Provided there are no problems in the service brake system, they will still operate. The ABS system on your vehicle uses a wheel speed sensor on each of the front wheels. Hydraulic pressure to each wheel is controlled independently of the other when the ABS activated. The rear wheels use one common sensor; it is also used for the speedometer. When the ABS system detects either rear wheel is locking up, it controls hydraulic pressure equally to both rear wheels simultaneously. If the speedometer is functioning properly, the sensor is working. Check the obvious first, fuses. If the fuses are ok, it will require the use of a scan tool to retrieve the DTC, (Diagnostic Trouble Code) to diagnose the problem.
