Difficulty shifting gears. Problem?

I'm a NYC guy so I don't know much about trucks. It is a 96 manual Ford F-150.

The symptoms manifested itself when Seattle had unusually cold temps these last few days.

I'm hoping there is some corrolation. It is exceedingly difficult to put into any gear and any attempt to put it in reverse makes a grinding sound.

Though when in motion gears are easier albeit still a bit stubborn to shift.

When the truck is "dead" shifting is smooth as silk. Only when I start does it present a problem.

Any insight will be appreciated.

Did you check the fluid level? It takes ATf for fluid. Those are known for leaking on top and most oil change places do not check the fluid levels in those transmissions.

Re: Difficulty shifting gears. Problem?

You have a hydraulic clutch and it is low on brake fluid. Find the clutch master cylinder on your firewall, closer to the center of the truck than your brake master cylinder. It has a round cap that screws off, I think. If you can't find it go to any repair shop and tell them you need clutch hydraulic fluid. I,m pretty sure the '96 still uses dot 3 brake fluid in the clutch hydraulic reservoir. NOTE: there is a rubber cup under the cap of the clutch master cylinder, you must just simply lift this out before adding fluid. Just pump the clutch pedal several times after adding fluid and you will get enough air out where it will shift better. Good luck.
