stuck in 4 wheel drive..need help!!!

had some really icy roads and snow here so i was using fourwheel drive around town. My blazer has push button fourwheel drive and i noticed when i put it in fourwheel drive it took a lot longer than normal for it to engage, and then when i tried to get it out the light will blink a few times and then stay on. I can hear the motor on the transfer case running when i push the button but the motor never disengages it. anyone know what i can do? dont want to be driving around when it isnt snowy and eating my tires up. thanks

Sounds like the vacuum switch on top of the transfer case broke in the open position allowing the vacuum to remain on after the motor disengages it.

Re: stuck in 4 wheel drive..need help!!!

I don't know your entire situation but I might have had a similar problem last spring. I was in 2wd and spun out on some gravel, I don't know if I somehow touched the 4x4 low, but it engaged and wouldn't change to either 4x4 Hi or 2wd as I drove down the road. I finally got frustrated and pulled over, went in reverse about 10 yards while I pressed the 4x4 Hi button. It made the switch and then I was able to put back into 2wd. I have had no problems with any switching since (and I live in Edmonton, Alberta so the 4x4 gets lots of use in the winter).

Easy to get out, a pain to put back in. Small hands and arms are a plus.

Re: stuck in 4 wheel drive..need help!!!

The vacuum switch is on top of the transfer case, above where the front drive shaft goes in. What works for me is, I get under it with my legs towards the back and I can get my arm up in there to get a wrench on the switch, 7/8 if I remember correctly. There's not much room, you have to take the wrench off and reset in many times. There is a plunger that is rounded on the bottom, if it is stuck pushed in, that is your problem. It should stick out and you should be able to push it in and see it spring back out. The hard part is getting it back in, it sometimes takes a little while to get it at just the right angle for the threads to start. It's not very costly.
