car is rev limiting at 3800

i have a friend who has a 2001 sunfire..that was telling me he couldnt launch and that his car had no power.... i checked it out and his car acts as if there is a rev limiter at about 3800 or 3900 its really weird and his car has no power what so ever ..his car died when i was trying to go up hill and peel out..i tried to launch it (*hence how i found out about the 3800 rev limit) and i poped it into drive and it didnt lauch the tires didnt ever scratch they juss started to move...im goign to check his tranny fluid(auto trans) incase someone decides to still ask if its a AT or MT
thankz in advance

Re: car is rev limiting at 3800

haha thats proly ur problem right there. u cant "launch" in an automatic....popping it from neutral to drive will burn up ur tranny VERY quickly. congrats, he proly has to get a whole new one now. now as to the rev limiting part, i dunno if a blown tranny would limit the revs or not, im sure its not good for it, but whatever. if ur mechanically inclined i would take it apart and check all the clutch disks and gears to make sure.

Re: car is rev limiting at 3800

dude....automatics have a different rev limit than manuals and doing a tranny drop is a stupid ass way of checking to see it everything is alright. if you put you foot on the gas in neutral the computor is causing the engine to misfire in order to stop people like you and your friend from destroying the car.

Re: car is rev limiting at 3800

you could have a clogged catalytic converter, this could cause excessive backpressure and keep you from attaining high rpm's.

A sunfire is not a drag strip car.
When you put it in drive with a normal take off does it run alright?

Re: car is rev limiting at 3800

automatics have a rev limiter at 4000 (or apparently a hair below that) when they're in park/neutral, put it in gear and your rev limiter will be at 6000, 2.2 liter, right?
