97 cavalier alternator or???

Last night my car acted like the alternator was going when I pressed on the gas the lights dimmed and the heat blew harder. When I let off the gas the light went back to normal and the heat wasnt blowing as hard. Also there was a bit of lack in power not that a 2.2 has alot anyways. I was wondering if this is the alternator going or something else, I drove it home 10 miles last night, and about 60 today driving home from work it seemed to be ok except for the blower. Started every time. Now I was also wondering if this bout of really cold weather could be part of the reason for the strangness? Any input would be great thanks

Re: 97 cavalier alternator or???

you say its "started every time" if thats true then your alternator should be fine, what i find VERY strange is when you press on the gas, your heater blows harder, which is fine, but your lights actually get dimmer??? that makes NO sense to me, also, you said you drove it home and everything worked fine except for the blower?? what was wrong with the blower? did it just quit working?

odds are the cold weather is causing your battery to take a shit
either way, most auto parts stores will test your alternator and your battery for free,

Re: 97 cavalier alternator or???

Well I tell you what the weird things happen to me thats for sure, When I went home last night, the lights dimming made me think alternator, the heat is still blowing. Its just a weird situation, but going from the 40s to the 20s and very windy really stinks, THe more I drove it makes me think something else but my bofriend thinks its still the alternator. But we are going to autozone when he gets home, So i guess we will see from there I just wanted to get some ideas. Pretty bad I have had more issues with this car over a 92 oldsmobile with 170,000 miles on it. Too many thats for sure.

Re: 97 cavalier alternator or???

my money is on the battery...

cold weather causes batteries to die, not alternators

Re: 97 cavalier alternator or???

see about a bad ground.. I called my dad up, and he said he had a car that did that too (not while pressing on the gas tho, just at randome times...) and he said it was a bad ground.. fixed that, and that fixed all his problims... and yes, it very well could be the battery.. but if its not, check for a bad ground
