1999 Golf Starting Problem

My 99 Golf wont start unless I hold the unlock button on my remote entry while turning the car over. If I do not hold down the unlock button and try to start it the car locks itself and activates the alarm and does not start. When I do start it using the unlock method then the car will lock itself and activate the alarm after the car is running. At this time the drivers side door becomes unfunctionable, power windows mirrors etc do not work. What could the problem be? I am assuming it is an electrical problem within the drivers side door.

open the driver door and pull back the rubber boot on the hinge area and check the wiring harness for cracks or frayed wires
