80 K10 Manual 4 Speed?

1980 k10 chev muncie floor shift 4 speed & np205
i pulled my sons muncie 4 speed top cover off, to help in removing the tranny.we were doing this to replace the coupling between the trans and the np 205 transfer case, some how he snapped it!! well to make a long story short, every thing is back in now and i am trying to put the top cover with the shifting forks back on. i was told to put the trans in nuetral and move the reverse gear slightly toward reverse to install it. i am having a real hard time.the shifter wont even shift outside the vehicle ,much less when i stab it back on the tranny. my son had tried it first and got the cover stuck. the forks werent any where near where they were supposed to be.
any help would be great.
