Hub assembly replacement issues.

97 Cavalier

Well. Got the spindle nut off easily enough but the rotor would not come off the hub. Banged away with hammer/sledge for a bit and it popped off. Except part of the hub assembly and inner bearing races came with it. So now the remainder of the hub assembly is rusted in so bad I dont see a way to get it out without doing major damage to the CV shaft. Yes, I have also removed the 3 Torx bolts. I dont quite understand why Chevy didnt put the bolts holding the assembly in through the back like every other car I've worked on. Makes it relatively easy to pound out with an air chisel with the proper adapter.

If anyone has any incites it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Steve

Nevermind. I just removed the strut bolts and steering linkage and pounded away at the back of the bearing assembly. Still wasnt easy but it eventually came out.

Re: Hub assembly replacement issues.

Could have tried this...

Get a torch and heat it for a fit. Hammer and a pry bar. The whole hub assembly mounts flush to the steering knuckle. You just need to get something behind it and it should pop off. When you hammer on the rotor, you should have done it between the wheel studs instead of whaling on the outter portion which i am going to assume you did.
