98 Blazer computer reset

Is there a way to reset the on board computer? I know you can disconnect the battery to clear things but I mean a hard reset.

Thanks in advance!

Take it to your nearest auto parts store and they will check and clear the codes for nothing. But disconnecting the battery literly does the same thing it clears all codes also.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

Yeh I thought so. My problem is that I replaced the heater core in my blazer and now with all connections good I am getting the airbag light! I notice the airbag connections have a metal clip on them, do they need to be connected to ground? I have one that isn't connected at the present(glove box still out).

If you don't have all the airbag harness connected that would be why you light is on. Put the whole airbag system back together before you connect the battery back up. At least I hope you disconnected the battery before you unhooked any of the airbag system if you didn't your playing with fire.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

The ONLY way to reset the OBDII is with a scan tool. Disconnecting the battery may turn the "Service Engine Soon" light off, but the codes will still remain in memory.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

I appreciate it guys!

Yes I definitely disconnected the battery first. I left it disconnected until I knew for certain all the air bag connections were together. I have checked and double checked them as well but I am still getting the light.

So Old_Master you think I may need to clear it with that OBDII scan tool? Is that something you've heard of before?

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

The OBDII system is designed that way purposely. DTC's are burned to memory as they occur. In the case of a dead battery, the battery can be charged and the DTC's can be retrieved. When the PCM is reset, all DTC's and stored data is erased, including long term fuel trim data.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

a complete reset then would be to clear all dtc's with a scanner then disconnect the battery for a period of time.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

Guys, for the most part this is my wifes vehicle and she does need to use it. I don't want to put it all back together if there is a real problem with the air bag system. I just do not know why the light would be on still. Like I said before I have checked all the connections (yellow) for the airbags.

If were talking about the air bag light the only way to make this light to go out is make sure the airbag system is functioning 100% Ie check every connection and if all else fails take it to the dealer for a inspection. You need a gm scanner to read and clear airbag codes as far as I know. When I first repaired my truck I had to have the dealer reflash the system to get my light to go out but that was when the airbag system tripped.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

Did you put the fuse back in? Did you check the ABS fuse? When I did my heater core, I pulled the fuse and almost forgot to put it back in before connecting the battery back up.

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

Never took the fuze out. There were only 2 airbag connections that were unhooked and they are both reconnected. Unless like I saaid before that they may need to be grounded since the clip on them is metal. I am going to try that and see if it works. I'll let you all know!

Re: 98 Blazer computer reset

Well I checked everything including all the connections and the airbag light is still on. I even clipped that one connection on the passenger side to a ground but it didn't help. Everything else works fine. I am relying on the fact that it just needs resetting because I'm driving it starting tomorrow.
