Unhappy rubbing/humming noise underneath

Hello, I'm back with another mysterious noise from my beloved lil blazer. I am hearing a weird humming from underneath, only when the truck is in gear and moving. The faster I go, the higher the pitch, almost like tire noise, but it's not the tires. When I slow to a stop, the pitch gets lower and the noise stops completely just before I come to a complete stop. (stops at around 5mph) Then starts again as I start to drive again. It seems to be louder on the passenger side. Just not loud enough to pinpoint. I had the trans built last year, in fact, my warranty just ran out at the end of November. They did the complete rebuild, including the sonnax kit/upgrade. Also the torque convertor. Not sure if it's related. I would like to have a starting point on this one, as I need to have this truck running properly for a long distance trip in the very near future. My mom is having open heart surgery, and I'd like to be there before she goes in. Any ideas or opinions are very welcome!!!!!

It does sound like you have a wheel bearing out usually you can take your tire off and feel the differance between a good bearing and one that's bad. I'm having the same issue with my blazer at the moment. I would rether have your's it's easyer to replace your bearings and much cheaper being a 2wd.

Another thing you may want to look at could be the U-joints. I had one going bad in a 95 S-10 extended cab that acted the same way. Make sure you have all preload off of the joint when you check it for slop, mine seemed okay until I took it apart and found most of the roller bearings missing from one of the caps.

Denise,

You have a bad wheel bearing hub I think.

Go down the highway and turn to the right a bit, if the noise stops, then it is your passenger wheel bearing. If not turn left while moving on the highway and if the noise goes away or gets a lot quiter, then it is your drver's side bearing.

BlazerLT you say if turning right it's the pass side bearing, well my grow goes away when you corner to the right so I also thought it was the right side bearing. I replaced it today with one from Carquest and I seem to have the same grow in the right front. Bad bearing maybe?

Could be a bad bearing. You sure it went away when turning right?

Not a whole lot, a sweeping bend in a road will do or just turn it to see if the noise goes away.

Re: rubbing/humming noise underneath

If you turn right you put more weight on the left or drivers side hub.
Jack the front up under the lower control/A-arm and spin the hub/wheel and see if it grinds. Also you can pull on the hub/wheel assembly and look under on the inside at the bearing to hub mating area and see if it moves/wiggles around. Said this was a 2wd so hubs are actually more expensive than the 4wd ones.

Yes im positive after changing the bearing I swear the grow has gotten worse. When you test drive it the grow goes away on any right hand curve witch was the same problem before I started. The bearing I changed was the right front it was a lifetime unit from Carquest. I was thinking I got a bad bearing.

Re: rubbing/humming noise underneath

For sure I think it is.

Only use GM bearings, they are a lot better quality and will last much longer.

Spend a little more money and you get something you don't have t replace every year.

Those cheap China bearings are garbage.

Re: rubbing/humming noise underneath

Well, I took it for a ride on a long, curvy road. No change in the noise when I turn right or left, slightly or sharply. The cars behind me were a concerned, I'm sure. I had the kids with me, and they are telling me, in their expert opinion, that it seems to be coming from under their seat. Any other ideas???

Re: rubbing/humming noise underneath

When is the last time you checked your fluid in the transfer case? And have you inspected your U-joints yet this could actually be your problem if your bearings are good?

Re: rubbing/humming noise underneath

I've had the truck a couple years, never checked the transfer case fluids. Waiting for the hubby to check the Ujoints......
