Transmissions in Winstar and Freestar

I noticed today that the Freestar has 2 types of transmissions in them one is the Trans. code AX4N and the other is AX4S any one know if ones better than the other...Just curious... Thanks..Gary

Gary as far as I know, they are the same. I've heard reports that the 'updated' 2001+ AX4N supposedly has some updated internals. I bet that AX4S/AX4N thing on the freestar is a typo. I highly doubt they have two different transaxles for the same van. The 3.9/4.2 are basically the same engine.

I'm betting that's a typo as well, my understanding was the AX4S was used in the Windstars until 2000, the AX4N in the Windstars and then Freestars from 2001 and on.

Thanks for the replies.. It may very well be a type-o. I was looking on Rock auto to see what parts sale for on there and noticed they listed 2 types of transmission filters.. one for each above listed trans. I need to put the Freestar up on ramps one day and look under to see what type of trans it has. Just curious.. Thanks...
