Checking/Adding Tranny Fluid, 97 Z24

hi all,

I've seen there is no dipstick for the 97 2.4L Z24 for the tranny, I hear there is 2 plugs on the tranny itself, I need to know:

1. How to check my tranny fluid, to know if it is low
2. how to fill it
3. how to tell if the fluid is good or bad thats in it already
4. anything else i need to know

Thanks and I hope I get a reply soon! I love my Cavalier, best car out there, I LOVE it!

Re: Checking/Adding Tranny Fluid, 97 Z24

is it a 4 speed auto matic? D 3 2 1. on the shifter. the car has to be raised and level so you can get under car "The check plug is located right above the right front corner of the transaxle oil pan,NEAR the engine oil drain plug". to check the fluid level ,take out the plug and fluid should be at the bottom of check hole ,it may drip out a bit. you should see the Trans Fluid filler cap looking down into engine transaxle compartment, mine is red. If no fluid drips out you just add fluid until it starts to DRIP out of check plug hole . What is recommended is that the transaxle be at normal operating temps when you check it and that you shift it thru the gears ending in park. check the fluid to see if it is dark in colour or smells burnt.

Transaxle is the transmission (fancier name I Guess)open hood look down on right side you should see cap ...TRANS fluid .you will need a long funnel if you need to add fluid. My car has the 2.2 in it so your location may vary .

In a RWD car such as a Camaro, you have a Transmission, and driveshaft, then a rear axle.

In something FWD like your cavalier, or mid engine like an MR2 you'll have a Transmission, with the differential built into it, like the rear end does on the RWD car. So since the Transmission, and the rear axle are one piece it's called a TransAxle
