Putting a 98 5.0 vortec in a 96 blazer? Is it possible and is it hard?

Hello, I have the chance to buy a wrecked/rolled 98 chevy truck, it is a 1500 with a 5.0l vortec v8, it has the 4l60e trans and is 2wd. I am not too impressed with the power of my 4.3l v6. I know some of you might say if you dont like it sell it and buy something with a v8, I want to possible put that 5l v8 in my blazer. It appears as though everything is the same as far as setup. The truck runs great and has about 100,000 miles if i remember correctly. The transmission in my blazer now is a 4l60e with approx 69,000 on it. The engine I just put in about 4 months ago has about 150,000 on it. My buddy has a 01 gmc sierra with the 5.3l v8, I was overwhelmed with the nuts that thing had. I plan on keeping my blazer basically forever or until it rots itself away basically because i like it alot and it is my firstvehicle, I also have alot of time into it on just little things to make it look good. I see people have put the old 350 carbed engine in the older style and newer style blazers but not newer efi engines. I plan on getting rid of the fan on the engine and putting in a electric radiator fan like one on a taurus. Let me know your thoughts of this, and if you think it is possible or not. I have the place to do the swap and pleanty of time. Thanks alot, Brian

If you do this, you will need to use the V8 transmission (it has more plates in it and is beefed up over the 4.3 trans), along with the entire wiring harness and PCM - provided your vehicle is the same model year. It gets legally sticky if you're trying to set the '98 equipment into something newer, but you can generally use newer equipment in an older vehicle provided you use the entire support system from the newer engine/trans (the PCM and related wiring).

Re: Putting a 98 5.0 vortec in a 96 blazer? Is it possible and is it hard?

Hey thanks for the reply, I planned on using the entire wiring harness and all wiring from the 98 truck to put in my 96 blazer. Ive allready had my truck all apart once and basically know where everything goes and such. I was more worried about it fitting, and if i will need anything custom or not? Wasnt sure if it would basically plop right in with some minor work. I think the electrical and exhaust might be the biggest problem. I was also thinking about going with the 5 speed manual transmission, I love manuals so much better than autos. My dad has a 98 chevy 2500 with a 350 v8 vortec and it has a 5 speed. What is typical mpg for a 5.0l when in a truck with a 5 speed and not driven hard? I know my dads is under 18 mpg and he shifts at 2k and makes slow stops. I am basically going to have everything ripped apart on my blazer, If I do this I am also replacing the heater core, so then the dash will be all apart and if i have to i can run all the wiring in there too if i need to. Basically can I take the engine, put it in with it mounting to the motor mounts fairly easy, and will the transmission and transfer case all mount together with the cross member in the stock locations? This is the biggest concern is the transmission staying in the stock location so i can keep the stock driveshafts. Another thing is, am I going to have any problems with the steering shaft? Thanks alot and sorry for the long posts, Brian

I can only speak on behalf of a 2000 Envoy with a 2001 LS1 and a 4L60E from a tahoe. I used to get about 14 in the city and 19 with my 4.3, and i get 14ish in the city and 22ish on the highway with a 4.10 e-lockers, with 22 inch wheels.
---> Engine, ECU, Harness $2000; Transmission $1250; Oil pan, Headers, Exhaust, Fuel pump, Fans $800; Seeing the look on the owner of the mustang's face i just passed, Priceless...

I own an 84 s-10 blazer with a 305tpi and a 700r4 from an 87 IROCK. There was a lot of work. The rad support had to be noched out to sopport the new 4 core and the dual electric fans. after market motor mount kit (bolt in). Shortened drive shaft. And an aftermarket tranny crossmember designed for my application. There is quite a bit of work involved in doing this swap. But there is a tone of info about it from guys who do these swaps for a living go to www.MyS10.com. If you can't find an answer to you questions there I don't know what to tell you.
