Windshield Washer Fluid - Little or no Sprayat1212b 12-17-2006, 04:05 PM Hello all. I was wondering if anybody can help with this problem. My windshield washer fluid does not spray any washer fluid fpr my 89 Caprice 9C1, only after several tries, just a little comes out on both sides, then does not come out again. (I've filled it, tried to check if there was any blockage which I don't think there was) When I have it going, I hear the clicking noise, that I suppose is to cause it to spray but results in no spray. Is it possibly the motor? Is that expensive to replace or repair? I live in Toronto Canada, and as such need to get this looked at before the snow and salt is everywhere. Fortunately we've been having very warm weather but in this day in age, you never know. Any help with would be appreciated! bobss396 12-18-2006, 06:57 AM You probably need to rebuild your washer pump since it is working but is very weak. They're around $10 and pretty easy to install. Bob GreyGoose006 12-18-2006, 04:28 PM mine comes out in spurts, not a continuous stream. it seems to coincide with the position of the wipers. HLandin 12-27-2006, 08:06 PM I would say your pump went south. Out of the three Caprices I've had so far, I had to replace the pump on the first two. But, like bobss396 said, its an easy fix. 1968 Pontiac 12-31-2006, 10:40 AM Could just be the rubber diaphragms need to be replaced. They're under the top cover of the pump where the three hoses are connected. Just remove the three hoses, then the four screws and you're there. Shouldn't take more than five minutes. Buy the new diaphragms from a GM dealer, the ones at crappy tire are more like a peice of plastic than rubber. At least they were the last time I did this repair about ten years ago. If I rememeber, the diaphragms are part of a kit which includes the cover with the three plastic nozzles. If you discover the matter is worse, buy a used windshield wiper moter assembly at Standard Auto Wreckers (if you live in the east end of the city) for around $25.00, it'll probably work better than any aftermarket one unless you buy from the dealer. Of course at that price you'll have to remove it yourself. I had one from UAP/NAPA and it never did work properly for three years until I replaced it with a fresh factory one I found on a donor car at Standard this past summer. The pulse wipers never worked on the one from UAP. Blue Bowtie 12-31-2006, 09:02 PM Did the 1989 models still have the impulse type pump operated by the wiper motor cam? If so, the check valves and diaphragm are available as a kit for next to nothing. If it is a separate pump motor, try cleaning the pump out with hot water, then the lines, then the nozzles. at1212b 01-01-2007, 05:57 PM Hey All, Wow, thank you to all for taking the time and effort in responding. I actually just ended up following the suggesting in replacing the Washer Pump and it works great now, as during the holidays with it being busy and everything, that was the quickest/easiest solution. And this hopefully guarantees it working for a long time. A Happy New Year to all and many great rides ahead! PeteA216 01-02-2007, 01:20 AM When you say replace it, did you replace it with the electric motor retrofit type that mounts perfectly where the original washer pump was, or just a whole new cam powered pump assy? bobss396 01-04-2007, 07:28 AM I'm on my 2nd NAPA washer/timer unit. I have the pulse/delay option on mine. They work great for like 6 months then get flaky or quit totally. Of course the part warranty is 3 months. I'll have to cruise my favorite boneyard for one out of a wreck. Rock Auto had Trico units for around $34, which I will probably get if I can't find a good used one.
