96 tahoe. anyone ever heard of that happening?

It is possible that the driver inside the PCM could fail closed and hold the injector open.
Other possible causes could be faulty injector or the ground (driver) wire from the injector shorted to ground prior to the PCM.
This system on your 96 has a poppet attached to the injector...typically the poppets stick closed

As GMMerlin said it could.

But you need to do some testing to find out.
Like unhook the injector driver and see if the injector is still open.
Do you have it apart or what testing have you done on it or why do you thin the VCM is holding it open?

that's what the shop said after they replaced all the
injectors (2 of them twice), the pressure regulator, and
ultimately the computer. does seem to have fixed the
fuel problem, but now tranny has only 2cd gear.

the computer came from a salvage yard, and i believe
i'm in limp mode because of it.

they did show me one injector squirting a stream of
fuel about 8 feet with key on. Got all my old parts back and will test the injectors as you advise.

if the computer did cause it, will reflashing or
reprogramming at the dealer fix it you think?

I'm not a fan of the used part deal at all.Not in todays world.You have no idea at all wha tthe previous owner or the accident did to that part.I just don't do it,and advise ALL customers that they had better think long and hard about going used.I refuse to stand there all day on my time swapping out bad parts over and over again.They pay not me.

to twisted tech. i agree with you there. unfortunately
when i went back for my tahoe, the shop had already
done it. (i wouldn't have approved). with the tab at
1600 dollars and now the tranny not working, i just
wanted to get it and my old parts the h... out of there.
i will put my original comp back on there and deal
with whatever happens with the injectors.

gonna sound REAL stupid now.... i have one of the
lines from the spider here. where is the "poppet"?
on the end with the electrical connection, or the end
that plugs into the cylinder? same question for the
"injector" where the atomization takes place.

1600$ and transmission not working and you did no agree/approve for them to do all of that.
I would howler bloody murder.

If it was the VCM/PCM doing it as said I would go for a rebuilt VCM before you blow the transmission to.

I did not know you were posting at the same time i posted.
The poppet is on the end of the plastic tube running to the cylinder.
You will have to squeeze the tabs it and pull it out of intake.
The injector itself is in the injector body.
Do not remove the plastic tube/poppet from injector.
If you have it apart unplug the electrical plug in to injectors and prime up fuel pressure to.
See if it squirts out plugged in or unplugged.
If it squirts unplugged it is the injector itself.
