Dealer cost to replace EGR valve

For anyone interested, here are the price quotes (High?!?!) from my dealer today. The reason for my visit to the dealer (other than having a day off), was that I've had a problem with my gas gauge. I already had figured out from this forum that it was the fuel sending unit, but I wanted a quote from the dealer to replace it.

They read the following codes: P0464, P0463 and P0401.

New fuel pump w/fuel sending unit $882 (Note: it would be about $100 less for just a new fuel sending unit)
New EGR valve w/gasket $447
Clean the EGR passage tube $94

Anyway, I nixed the whole plan from the dealer. I'm sure my EGR just needs to be cleaned (I've never cleaned it before) and I'lll do that soon, myself, thanks to the instrucitons in this forum! I'm going to live with a bad gas gauge, 'cause it's just an annoyance and the fuel pump is fine. I do need to investigate how long a fuel pump typically lasts.

Here's my info...

Re: Dealer cost to replace EGR valve

I don't hear much about the pump itself going bad. If you're interested in maximizing its life, consider a fuel filter changeout. If you can clean the EGR valve and tube, you can do the fuel filter blindfolded. Those prices are silly!

Re: Dealer cost to replace EGR valve

Yowch!!! $1500 to do these repairs?

An OEM EGR valve on E-Bay can be found for $160 including shipping.
With a more detailed search and more time, can probably find one for under $100. Not that they need replacing, just a good cleaning most of the time as you know.

I still cannot comprehend why the laws of supply and demand haven't balanced the shop labor rates. They get $89 an hour around here, when the average car driver's wage is $13 per hour. I'm willing to bet that in the most affluent parts of this entire country the shop labor rates are the same as in Maine.
How much are the shop rates where you all are from?

Re: Dealer cost to replace EGR valve

Update: I just checked my EGR valve and it was working fine. A little bit of carbon built up, but I cleaned the valve and the tube with carb cleaner (very easy to do).

Money saved based on the dealer quote = $447+$94-$3.25 (carb cleaner) = $547.50

I'll check the codes again soon to see if this gets rid of the P0401.

i for the life of me cannot figure out why they do so much business as they do with labor rates that high? a friend of mine is a g.m. tech and at their dealer they are working under a backlog? and the majority of the backlog are cash customers out of warranty. he said they even get people bring in beaters with 200,000 + on them. i go to a local independant guy as much as i can that charges 60/hour. we have some mecedes dealers around here over 120/hour.
