Question 91 grand prix se replacing front struts

this is out of the repair manual.

Install the self contained replacement cartridge. Secure the closure nut using strut cap nut wrench J-35671, or equivalent. Tighten to 82 ft. lbs. (110 Nm). The cartridge does not need oil added unless specified. If oil is not supplied with the cartridge, add the specified amount of hydraulic jack oil.

question is what is the specified amount of hydraulic jack oil ?

The cartridge is a self-contained, sealed, gas charged unit, and will not require any hydraulic fluid. That is the strangest instructions I've ever heard of.

Rich, that oil is in the housing itself, for transferring heat from the cartridge out to the housing. When you pull the old one out if it is original you will see the oil down in there, when cartidge is installed the oil should be about 1/2 up the cartridge body. I have seen some replacement strut catridges that say this is not required, I do it anyway.

I see, makes sense I guess, just never saw it. I always use a little anti-seize to keep them from rusting in place.
