squeaky aftermarket brakes??

I have a 2001 GT. I replaced my front brake pads and rotors about 15,000 miles ago. The past few months I have been getting a squeak when the tires are in rotation...squeak stops when I brake. I figured the squeak was a wheel bearing, but the the Pontiac dealer said it is my brakes...that aftermarket brakes sometimes squeak. The shoes are still in good shape and I don't need to do anything. Well, the squeak is loud and pretty much squeaks all the time. Is this normal? I've never had aftermarket brakes do this on other cars. If I replace the brake pads again will the same thing happen? I had another shop check it out and they said it was the brakes too. Chris

Sounds like glazing to me. Take the pads off and give them a light sanding, as well as the rotors.

Squeak driving and no squeak braking is usally the wear indicator.

Re: squeaky aftermarket brakes??

Two places said my brakes were in good condition. It also squeaks when in reverse. Would that be the brakes and/or wear indicator?

P.S. When I say "I" replaced my brakes, I mean I took it somewhere and had it done. lol

Re: squeaky aftermarket brakes??

Sounds whoever you took it to put in crappy brake parts. Stick with quality name brand disc pads and rotors. I use Raybestos (PG) Professional Grade ceramic pads and rotors and never get squeaking. There are other good bands too like Hawk, Performance Friction and AC Delco.

Be sure to get the rotors checked out for any possible lateral runout and either get them turned down or replace outright before installing new pads.

Re: squeaky aftermarket brakes??

It sounds as though the pads are loose in the caliper, and tipping against the rotor when the caliper retracts. Cheap branded pads have inferior retaining clips (some don't even include them) which will cause this problem. There is a spray that is made my Permatex called Disc Brake Quiet which you can spray on the back of the cheapo pads to keep this from happening. The other alternative is to replace the cheap pads with a better brand like previous posters suggested.
