Starting issue

Well my 98' Rodeo with just under 120k on it didnt start well today. I sputterd and then started reving real high and then ran out of gas.(I forgot it was so low) Then i put a gallon in and it started back up doing the same thing. I then disconected the battery and pluged it back in to reset the comp. and it ran fine. Will this happen again, what was the problem. Thanks

Depends on whether or not you think the "E" on the gas gauge stands for "ENOUGH".

well the gas gauge doesnt work so go on the trip meter. Im just wondering if the sputtering and high reving had to do with the lack of gas.

You may have sucked some floaties or gunk into the fuel pump pick up screen. Disconnecting the battery might have had nothing to do with correcting the sputtering, it may have been that it just needed time for whatever was possibly partially blocking the fuel pump suction to fall back down into the tank. I would probably consider, at the very least, replacing the fuel filter.
