Is there a way I can tell a 5.7 from a 4.3?

Can anyone give me some things that I can use to see if an engine is a 5.7 or a 4.3?

Because a couple of people have told me the engine in my car is a 350 because my hoses are green (which every 5.7 I have seen have green hoses, and all the 4.3's I have seen have black hoses), the engine looks bigger than a 265, and also my car was in a front end accident in its lifetime, and alot of parts where replaced in it, so its possible the engine could have been replaced.

Now, my 8th digit of my VIN is a W, which I know that means it should be a 4.3L. But my friends 8th digit is a W too, and he has a 5.7 because his car was a former police car. So, I need something more than just a letter from the VIN.

Can anyone help me out?

Green hoses = police package. Doesn't mean 5.7. The engines are the same physical size as the other and look the same. W is 4.3, and if he actually had a 5.7 in his car, it was retrofitted in.

4.3 cars have a single tailpipe, where 5.7 cars have two.

Police cars had the 4.3 as standard while the 5.7 was optional, just like civilian cars.

Just check the casting number on the left rear ledge of the block.

On the drivers side of the block if you see "588" that is a L99, an LT1 will have "327" though in other places a L99 has "327" cast in as well.

Like Blue said behind the drivers side head will be either 4300 or 5700 guess which is which.

Check the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label on the underside of your trunk. This will tell you the parts that originally came with that VIN number (VIN on SPID in trunk should match the one on the dash). The SPID has a series of codes indicating which parts/options that VIN originally came with. If the SPID has a L99, you have the 4.3L; if it has a LT1, you have the 5.7L.

Even without your handle it is pretty clear you do not know the 94-6 cars. The LT1 when diven conseravtivly is known to get mid 20s and a few L99s have approached 30 but mid 20s is about right for them too.
With such a good computer system in the car the displacement really does not hurt milage as old school carbed or TBI accustomed folks would think.

I have a 96 Caprice putting out in exess of 200hp over stock(stock was 260 it is now 470-480) naturally aspirated with 3400 stall converter 3.73s and racing in the same tank of gas I still get near 20mpg on the highway:iceslolan

If you study the USEPA mileage ratings (as advertised in teh window sticker) the 1996 B-car with the L99 got 1 MPG better city driving mileage and identical highway mileage. IIRC, the ratings were something like 15/25 for the L99 and 14/25 for the LT1. I'd have to pull out my old window sticker to get the exact numbers, but you get the idea. Once the car is punching a hole in the wind it requires a certain horespower to keep it moving. that power is the same regardless of the engine, and with the fuel management of the PCM, the LT1 uses no more fuel to make that level of power than the L99. In other words, they got something figured out right in their fuel and spark management programs.
