2ohm or 4ohm sub...

Wandering which sub I should get...a Kicker CVR with a 2ohm or a Kicker CVR with a 4ohm...whats the difference? Which is better etc.? I ordered the 2ohm without realizing it...guess that's what I get, but I can call them and change it if need be.

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

It really depends on if your amp is 2 ohm stable.

here is how my kicker zr600 plays out.

150watts RMS x 2 @ 4ohm Stereo
300watts RMS x 2 @ 2ohm Stereo
275watts RMS x 2 @ 1ohm Stereo

600watts RMS x 1 @ 4ohm Bridged Mono
550watts RMS x 1 @ 2ohm Bridged Mono
Typical: 750w RMS x 1 @ 4ohm Bridged

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

it all depends on which amp you have matching them...cuz.. if you have an amp way more powerful than what the subs can handle, you might not want the ohm load low.....you did good tho, cuz you only have one sub... you can wire the dual 2 ohm voice coils and get a 1 ohm load and get the most out of your amp. (assuming that our amp is stable at one ohm.) if its not stable at 1 ohm, i would suggest giving it back and taking the 4ohm dual voice coil sub.

but yea....the diffference between 2 ohm subs and 4 ohm subs is jus the configurations of wiring options that you have..... if you have multiple subs and such...with 2 ohm, the lowest you can go is 1 ohm, with a SINGLE sub. with 4 ohm, the lowest is 2ohms for a SINGLE sub. I prefer dual 4 ohm subs tho, cuz i always buy subs in pairs so that i can get a 1 ohm load to my amp when i combine them. if you have a pair of two ohm subs, the lowest you get is .5 Ohms....and most amps arent stable with that small of an ohm load.

this is wiring parallel..

1 DVC 4 ohm woofer parallel= 2 ohms
1 DVC 2ohm woofer parallel= 1 ohm
2- DVC 4ohm woofers- parallel=1 ohm
2- DVC 2 ohm woffers-parallel=.5 ohms

this is the load you get series/parallel

1 DVC 4ohm woofer- series= 8 ohm
1 DVC 2 ohm woofer- seires= 4 ohms
2-DVC 4 ohm woofers series= 4 ohms
2 DVC 2 ohm woofers seires= 2 ohm

hope that made sense, im kinda in a hurry now, i'll clean it up a lil bit later

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

No idea what amp....Any suggestions? I'm within the $150-200 range, looked at a Boss Blade BL2000...2 Channels...it rates it at 4ohm, from what I understand, I can wire that to 2ohms? I'm new at this...I'll have help from a friend who sells for roadhouse when I go to hook all this up

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

well, my firebird doesnt have a REAL sound system. It is pretty much stripped out for weight reasons. Its my toy. Im more interested in it for performance reasons than luxury. Just a stock ford stereo with some 6x9's in back and some 3 inch speakers in the dash to drown out the open headers. its for fast, not nice.

I put things like the nicer stereos and other luxury items in my crown victoria. Thats what its for and thats where the dvd player and throbbing sound system lives. I have it for nice not fast.

I learned about electronics when i worked at a shop where we repaired linear amps and other communication equipment. Mostly broadcast equipment like ham radios, cb's ect.

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

just if its dual 2-ohm coil...do not wire parallel down to 1-Ohm...they make special more expensive amplifiers for that kind of power.

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

I have a Alpine R-10. Does just fine for what I need and hits nice and hard. But I had to save space in the back so I can put my t-tops in the back still.

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

you know it bumps when you burp.

my zr600 kicks so hard it could crack pavement.

Ive had this amp behind my back seat, later hidden in the dash, and now in the CV. Its killed more speakers than i care to think.

Re: 2ohm or 4ohm sub...

Right now i have no speakers. What i didnt sell i blew up. My box holds two 12's for the firebird. My box isnt even in the car no more but i still have it along with some fried speakers still attached to it. The crown vic can hold a single 15. The last 15 i blew up was pretty cool. The cone down inside the speaker ripped completely off the face of the woofer. It didnt trip out the relay or blow any fuses.
