1995 4.3 vortec EDI distributor timing problems

who can tell me how to set my distributor in on a 1995 chevy s-10 blazer with the side mount plug wires and a 4.3 litrvi set the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke but cannot seem to drop the distributor in right to get the engine to start. my repair manual tells me to point the rotor at the #6 that is stamped in the distributor housing, and a bunch of people on this site tell me to point the rotor at the #1 plug wire on the cap. this distributor is not adjustable so once it is in, that is and the computer does the rest. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO POINT THE ROTOR SO THAT I CAN ATLEAST GET MY ENGINE TO FIRE SO I CAN THEN HOOK A COMPUTER SCANNER TO IT!!

The comp does the rest?Who in the #$*@ told you that?Dist out.#1 plug out, hold your finger up to the hole, bump the starter(and only bunp it),when you get squeze(blowing out of your finger) you are close, look at the timing marks and rool it over by hand til lyou get the marks on the balancer to 0 on the cover.Drop the dist in @ TDC or ( if you can't) just ,and I mean just before , and bump the starter,it will drop in as your holding it down.Snap her up and adjust your timing. There HAS to be a read me on this somewere.

Several of us did, including me. Re: 1995 4.3 vortec EDI distributor - (and this is straight from the GM Factory Repair Manual) - With the Enhanced Distributor Ignition, turning the distributor will have NO affect on the timing. Timing is controlled by the camshaft sensor and the VCM. You can take your foot out of your mouth now.

You may want to read redtahoe96's other Thread he started on the same subject.
