98 s10 with 350 swap???

Just a quick question for a friend.. is it possible to do a 350 swap to a 98 chevy s10 reg cab short box? and if so does anyone know what modifications would be needed to make it fit? thanks.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

yes its been done before. you will need v8 motor mounts and v8 swap headers. if the truck came with a 4.3 all of the accessories like alternator and ac can be reused as well as the trans. up to u to decide to stick with fuel injection or go with a carb.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

the 4l60e trans that is in s-series trucks was also used on v8 camaros and firebirds. the bolt patterns on the 4.3 and small block chevys i believe are the same. i would put a shift kit in it or use programing to firm up the shifts to reduce the chances of slippage with the v8's additional power. all of the 4.3's accessories like alternator, power steering pump, ac compressor, etc can be reused because a 4.3 is a 350 sbc without the back 2 cylinders so the front of the 2 are identical. 4x4 can be retained as well but most do the swap in 2wd trucks.

Not meaning to nitpick, but I hear this all the time. It is a 6-cylinder version of the 350, but it is the FRONT two and not the back two cylinders that have been removed.

it is a 350 without #3 and #6 cylinder. so im sry they arent the back two that are missing but you get what im saying...the front of a 4.3 is pretty much identical to the front of a 350.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

Why stop at a 350? It may be easier then other V8 swaps but this guy in my town dropped a 454 in his early 90s s10 and that thing is a beast. If I was doing a V8 swap on a project vehicle then I would go all out but thats just me.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

the initial question was about a 350 swap. its probably the cheapest swap because all the factory accessories can be reused. if you swap in an LS series engine or a big block, you have to buy new accesories. all v8 swaps will require headers, motor mounts, etc. all depends what kind of swap you wanna do.

Simple v8 swap is fine for me.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

There are 3 different versions on the 4L60E, S series (blazer, sonoma), C/K series (sierra, tahoe), and car series (camaro, vette, firebird). They are the same shells, but have slightly different internals. If you have 4WD, you should upgrade to the larger truck/suv series. But if you choose to keep your stock S-series 4L60E, you will be replacing it before too long, and if you use 4WD, even faster. BTW, the bolt patterns are close, the S-Series has 9 bolts, the rest have 8, it hasn't affected my 2000 LS1/4L60E Envoy.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

yeah if u do a v8 swap play it safe and put the v8 tranny in also i did a ford ranger swap and used the stock 5 speed tranny from the v6 BIG mistake it lasted bout 2 months then i had no first gear, and if i did try to use first gear the truck would jump up and down from a standing start not racing it,it would just be hop hop hop if i started it in 2nd it was fine had plenty of power was running 35"swampers on that

I have a 2000 S10 4wd 4.3 and wanted to tweak it to gain 20 to 30 horepower. After pricing the Headers and cam I thought it would be cheaper to do a 5.0 or 350swap. Has any body had any experience with the wirring harness and ECM? What will match up and what wont.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

i would also be interested in a 350 swap, my question would be about the fitment, i.e., distributor, radiator, airconditioning, etc. also, i'd like to keep mine fuel injected so what mods would need to be done to the wiring if doing, say, a tuned port injected motor from an early '90s camero? thanks for any feedback.

Re: 98 s10 with 350 swap???

If you have to ask that question, your not ready for the swap. Do some research and found out what it really takes, both dollar amount and skill. Don't swap a TBI, but TPI ..... i guess, the more popular swap is the LS1,2,5 or 7 into the late model (94-03) s series trucks. You will need the v8 engine harness, ecu and other electrical stuff that the TPI unit takes to run, special fit headers to clear the steering arm, and a few other things like a crossmember, oilpan, and engine mounts can be purchased as well as a custom harness for your engine. Plus you have to swap out the original transmission, and if you don't you will be replacing it in no time, along with other things.
