hmm if your gen is like mines it shouldnt matter. i had a 97pmc in my car and it was a 96, and we swaped a 97 3800 into a 96 as well. but im no 3rd gen expert, so im sure one of the other guys will chime in sometime today. but i dont see why it wouldnt fit, but i would try to get the wire harness for that engine if u could, thats just me.

Re: 86 IROC swap 87IROC info please

you would probably need to get the harness from the 87 due to the 9th injector (for cold starts) or splice the 9th injector wiring into the 86 harness. the computer would probably have to be changed out as well.

yeah, getting the 87 harness would be your best bet since it has the 9th injector

Re: 86 IROC swap 87IROC info please

That 9th injector is just a cold start injector and isn't all that critical. It basically added fuel during cold starts which in the other year motors they just implemented into the other 8 injectors to accomplish the same thing. If you don't live in Alaska you should be ok. However, if you have the harness off the older motor, it might be easier. You'll need the pcm as well and the chip that matches.

To be honest, just plug in the other motor, use you're pcm and chip for that motor and see how it fires. It should be so close itll be fine. I have an '87 or '88 350 with the 305 intake including that cold start injector in my '89 Trans-Am and I just had to get a chip that worked with the '89 350 fuel mapping. It doesn't have the cold start programming and the egr has been removed...aside form a check engine light it runs fine. They also sell programmed chips for your application if you need to adjust some. I used PCMforless.com. They are a pretty reputable company and I have never had a problem with them before. Good luck and let us know what happens.
