1997 Lumina wont start
A few times it would quit, but start back up. Yesterday it started, I went 1/2 mile, turned into a driveway, and it quit. I restarted, and it ran slow and was shaking. I had it pulled home. Today I tried to start it, and it hit one time and won try again. If I wait about an hour, it will fire 1 time and wont do it again.
I poured a little gas into the intake, and it started just fine, then quit.
What can I check just short of replacing the fuel pump?
Thanks.

Re: 1997 Lumina wont start
Verify that the pump is getting power. You can pull the connector under the car near the drivers side rear tire, close to the fuel tank. If it's getting power, take off the fuel cap and put your ear close while someone turns the key to "run", but don't start it. You should hear the pump hum. If it isn't getting power, locate the fuse panel under the hood near the front on the pass. side. There should be a fuel pump relay next to the A/C relay. Swap them and re-check for power to the pump. Next would be a good time to check fuel pressure. What engine do you have? 3100? Most likely since only 1% had the 3.4. If it's the 3100, you should have 41-47 PSI of fuel pressure with the key on, engine off.
EDIT: The fuel filter could be severely stopped up, also. If you end up changing the pump, you'll need a new filter anyway...

It sounds like a fuel issue, so check fuel pressure at the rail. It should be 41-47 psi key on/engine off. If it's below that, you need a fuel pump.

Thanks for the info. We will start on everything you two mentioned tomorrow.
I'm leaning tward a clogged fuel filter, but also the fuel regulator. I will post what we found when we find it, it may help someone else.
(To me the car is not worth a fuel pump.)

We have removed the gas tank, and I have found a new AC Delco fuel pump rebuild kit on ebay for $52.00 + $5.00 shipping. It comes with fuel pump, filters, and fuel lines. Here is the sellers link if anyone else needs a fuel pump, sensors, etc for any other car.
