Could soemone please give some insight.

I am trying to replace the ignition cylinder.

Alright guys, I am somewhat new to the group.

I have the original cylinder lock out. I can see where the aluminum has worn on the coupling, not allowing the crank to push forward all the way.

The problem I am having, is that on the replacement this coupling has a transfixing pin to keep it on the shaft.

It seems the original is pressfit.

Anyone wish to respond?

I watched a locksmith do mine a couple months ago and yes he used a punch to tap out a retaining pin.

Hey, thanks for responding bringselpup.

I actually ended up taking both units to a locksmith's house in Delaware last night.

He did say the originals have that coupling as a press fit, and you would have to hacksaw, or drill that piece off to get to the biscuits inside.

With my key, and the replacement cylinder, he just fit the replacement to the new key for $12.50. I think it was a good price, even with the drive to Delaware.

For what it's worth, I got the replacement (Crown Automotive, #4778122) from http://www.trailquest.com/4x4accessories/jeep_key_lock.shtml for $24.95 + $10.00 shipping.
