Getting a neonsPinwip 10-27-2006, 11:46 AM What if the car doesnt have the Multi-Layered Steel (MLS) Head Gasket? should i just keep lookign for a diffrent car..? neon_rt 10-27-2006, 12:59 PM If the engine doesn't have the MLS gasket, deduct the amount of having a new one (include the timing belt) installed from the price you would be willing to pay for the car in good working order. Without the MLS, the head gasket can start leaking any time. Most of the time something gets ruined in the process (such as warped head), costing more money than replacing it before it blows. neon_rt 10-27-2006, 01:11 PM The perils of buying a used car is that the price of the car is not nessesarily the price the car is going to cost you. You may pay $3500 for a used Neon and it be totally undriveable before the 3rd payment. You need to reserve a substantial amount of money to have any used car serviced after buying it. It may need brakes, head gasket, timing belt, struts, tires, radiator flush and fill, serpentine belt, radiator hoses, automatic transmission tune up {fluid/filter/band adjust, required every 30K miles}any number of things to make it a reliable used car. This is true with most used purchases. Some auto dealers sell "certified" used cars that have had everything checked out and then offer a warranty of some kind to cover anything they missed. Some cars can take years of neglect and still run, Neons are not one of those cars. Most compact cars require a lot more attention than the bigger cars and trucks do. Lightweight parts made to work harder everyday plays a big part in how much attention you must pay to PM. sPinwip 10-27-2006, 02:51 PM Well lets say that it isnt there.. how much should i ask to be taken off the price? neon_rt 10-27-2006, 04:48 PM If you are referring to the Black Neon for $3900, the KBB retail price for excellent condition states a maximum suggested retail of $3100. I would offer about $2200-$2400. The price range trade in value is : $1300-$1500 No dealer pays more than the Blue Book, so they are making plenty of $ even if you offer only $2200. sPinwip 10-28-2006, 12:35 AM thats 1500 off they aint gonna take that i know they wont..:uhoh: neon_rt 10-30-2006, 11:51 AM Keep looking then. Last year I bought a used minivan (2000 Grand Caravan). I went to several dealers and narrowed it down to 4 vans. I took a notebook and took notes and pictures of the ones I was interested in. I went home printed the pictures, typed up the notes and printed the price I was going to offer Large and in Bold on the top. Then I went to the first Dealer, I made them the offer of $8000 for a van with a sticker of $11,999 and it was on sale (in the newspaper)for $9,999. They said no, the price was firm. So I told them if they changed their mind before I got across town to the next dealer they could call my cell. I showed the salesman my pictures, my check from the bank, notes and offers to the other dealers and walked out the door. Before I got into my Jeep to leave, the sales manager came running out (almost got ran over running across the street) and said that the $8000 offer would be fine. I know dealers will come down in price, the retail price they put on their cars is for those with "SUCKER" tatooed of their forhead. If you need financing, arange it in advance, so you know what you can spend, your interest rate and how much your payments will be. Dealers re-sell loans. For instance, they run your credit and get an offer from a bank for 5 years at 8%. Then they turn around and tell you that the offer is 5 years at 12%. You accept so they write the loan as such and then get the difference back from the bank in form of a kickback in 90 days. Go to your bank or a internet auto loan site and apply for the loan. They will send you a blank check that has a minimum and maximum dollar amount printed on it. You will get a chart with the payments vs the loan amount, so you can make a responsible decision. Make your offer, if they refuse don't give in, show them that you have the check and can write it to any dealer. Make sure you don't show them close enough that they see the Min/Max amount printed on the check from the bank or they will try so sell you something else that is more expensive relative to the Max on the check. Don't feel obligated to spend the whole amount. grabbergreendart 12-11-2006, 11:58 PM i hope that info is helpful to you, it is for me. also how can you tell if its mls gasket?
