I think my 96' is cutting out becuase of heat, but engine temp remains always under half way:screwy:

Maybe if i reply to myself, peeps will see that my post has more replies and think it might be interesting to read. My 96' SR20DET keeps cutting out it seems to be in hot weather or if i start racing. Any ideas where to start looking to fix this problem?

Just be patient, man. There are a lot of knowledgeable members on here but they also have lives that they tend to before hoping on AF. Don't worry, they'll get you set straight. Welcome to AF:smile:.

could you describe the problem a little better? What exactly is the car doing?

well i would check your coolant temp sensor.

If you warm the motor up in the cold, does it still run this way, or is it only when its hot out?

It definatley runs better at night in the cooler air, i travelled about 80klms on a hot sunny day all on the highway at 100-120km/h, 30mins into the trip and the car seems to stop getting a fuel supply, i cant accelerate ,it loses speed and i gotta pull over to the side of the road before i get collected. After 2 mins of sitting by the road i can start it again and run fine for another 10 mins till it happens again. It did this like 10 times. I did the return trip later that night and all the way home not a single problem. The temperature guage never passes half way but i think it is still heat related. Also if i race around during a warm day it will happen again, but if i race around at night it runs fine. I would love to live my whole life racing around at night with no traffic...but no shops are open...and i get lonley:frown:

well let me answer the first q.

NO the SR20DET has no fuel temp sensor. the gas in the trunk acts as a COOLENT for the fuel pump. at NO time EVER the gas is subjected to heat until its in the motor.

(why do u think the fuel tank is in the back, and the fuel filter is in the coolest “right side” in the engine bay)

why the car dies, ur fuel pump is bad, how did i know that, well here u go:

so now, what keeps the fuel running to the car:
the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator, the amount of fuel delivered is relevant to the following sensors

# Oxygen (O2) sensor
# Coolant temperature sensor
# Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
# Barometric pressure sensor
# Battery voltage
# Throttle position sensor (TPS)
# Idle position switch (IPS)

Your car is working fine so I don’t think any of the sensors are bad. If they were, your car will not start or idle right, but that is not our case.

Now then, now we have the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump as the only two remaining suspects.

Ur fuel pressure regulator works on vacuum and valves, check the vacuum hose that is connected to it (again it will just work, or leak fuel)

If all pases then its your fuel pump that is the problem bro!

That makes sense to me, i'll start frigging with the regulator and pump.
Your info seems very helpfull i'll let you know how it goes. Thanguverymooch:rofl:

if it were the fuel pump, why would it run fine at night?

if it were the fuel pump, why would it run fine at night?

a car runs INDEPENDED of the out side temp bro! if he is not over heating, and the FUEL cuts off, then its fuel related.

im still confused. I know outside temp is a varying factor, but i dont understand why the fuel pump works when its cold, but not when its hot out? Im just confused.

Ok, i disconnected the hoses going to my in tank fuel pump and turned the car on and no fuel was getting pumped at all, so i figured that the 700hp pump after the surge tank was doing an emense amount of work by sucking through the surge tank and through the non working pump in the tank (700hp pump is now overkill for the motor that has been put in it). I decided to wire the in tank pump straight to the battery to see if it actually worked and it did, so i thought about a blown fuse but followed the wires to a relay so i figured the relay was screwed and wired it straight to the other fuel pump's relay. I havent been on a long drive in the heat yet but there is alot less noise comming from the 700hp pump now. Thanks for the tips and any ideas as to why heat might have been an issue i would like to hear.

less gas in the tank, the hotter the pump runs (the less it will last).
keep the tank 3/4 full if u will run the car hard!

Hey that is good info, i have noticed that it runs better on a full tank. I did the same long trip on a hot day yesterday and all the way there not a single problem..till i got to town and it stopped, the 700hp pump was very loud but i made it all the way there this time. Ok...i am going out now to find an equal pressure fuel pump to put in the tank to keep that surge tank full and stop the 2nd pump from sucking it dry and whining.
