I imagine it would get expensive fast but if you have enough time with a parts vehicle you could probably strip out what you need.
Yes, there is a sensor that reads the interior temperature. In my Tahoe, it's on the ceiling near the driver's door and, since it's a dual system, there may be one for the passenger side as well...couldn't say for sure.
There are also motorized duct dampers that will open and close based on what the computer tells them to do. I know there's at least one on the floor duct above the drivers pedals, and would guess there is at least one for each side of the upper dash vents and the passenger floor as well.
At a minimum, you'd have to get those put in and wired up...sounds like a mess to me but it may be nothing more than cutting into the ducts and running the control wiring to the HVAC controls. The question comes up a lot, maybe someone here could chime in with more specifics for you.
I think if I tried it, I'd end up with a lot of extra parts, a rattling dash, no A/C and a mad wife.
