help drain coolant from 89 corolla

i dont know how to drain the old coolant from the radiator. i know u can fill it from the top, but i dont know how to drain it out. i think its on the bottom of the car. but i dont know where or how it looks like.
the reason i have to drain it is because all the old coolant turned into rust.

Re: help drain coolant from 89 corolla

Did you just buy the car? The coolant may be "rusty" looking because it is from during the time that Dexcool came into play and is not green like standard etholyn-glycol mix.

There is a drain (pastic if if memory serves) at one of the corners on the base of the radiator. I think it's stuffed up there pretty good. If you still can't find it, you could (carefully) remove the lower hose.

Re: help drain coolant from 89 corolla

As already stated there is a petcock that you can open at the radiator base or you can remove the lower hose. There is also a threaded plug on the block you can remove to drain the water with the engine block. This plug is difficult remove if it never been touched in the car's lifetime. If you remove plug coat plug with antiseeze before reassembly. If you get everything well drained and flushed out it will take around 2 gallons of 50-50 mix to refill. You can buy the correct antifreeze from Toyota and a reasonable price. They offer both premixed or concentrated solution.

Let us know how you make out with your project
