Silverado Lifespans
I am curious to find out what the life span for a silverado is. I currently have a 2000 LS Z71 with 135,500 miles on it. It still runs great and is properly maintained and have never had a problem with it.
Of course, with vehicle age comes an increase in reliability concerns. At his point does the truck still have some good life ahead of it (i.e. 150,000+mi)...or is it time to begin looking for a newer model?

Re: Silverado Lifespans
Your truck probably has plenty of life left in it. There are quite a few of those around with 250,000 miles or so. Of course, it could crap on you tomorrow. Are you feeling lucky? I would keep it, but I work under the theory that having no payments means I can afford some repairs every once in a while. Look for minor stuff like alternators/starters to be going bad soon if not already. Like I said, I've personally been around at least 4 that all made it to ~200,000 miles of hard farm driving with oil changes when we got around to it (normally 5000 miles). And by hard, I mean hard driving and towing.

Re: Silverado Lifespans
My dads 91 silverado made 265k miles before the tranny went and another 6k miles before the engine did, not bad for an american vehicle

Re: Silverado Lifespans
Yeah, the guy I work with has like 180k+ on his 2001, and it runs as good as my 2002 with 50k.
Sucks about the alternator, though, I was kind of hoping mine would go out soon, so I could justify upgrading mine to a 145A one.

Re: Silverado Lifespans
If you're looking at keeping it for a long time, I would say once the costs out weigh the overall value of the vehicle, then it's time to get rid of it.

Re: Silverado Lifespans
There is more to a truck than just engines & transmissions. What about all those moving suspension parts: ball joints, spindles, control arms and the bushings. Then there is the other half of the drivetrain: u-joints, rear diff., axles, bearings, seals, and gears. All these things wear out with mileage. Would you want a great running truck (engine) that rattles, squeaks, clunks...etc. Sloppy steering from worn out parts. body mount bushings that are worn away. A truck that starts and runs great can still be a peice of junk.

Re: Silverado Lifespans
I had to replace the rear-end in my 2000 with 150K miles on it. Other than that, it has been a great truck. no complaints.. I can still peel out the tires whenever I want hmm.. maybe that is why the rear-end went out
my 93 Silverado had 140K before I traded it in for my brand new 2000 and it ran great, not really sure why I traded it. Guess I just liked the new style of the 2000's.

Re: Silverado Lifespans
My grandfather had a 1992 that he replaced the tranny once, did the normal wear and tear maintanence, and replaced some components of the suspension and front end. No major engine work. He did quite a bit of towing. And when he traded it in on a 2004 Z71 it had over 600K. Not bad in my book.
