Angry Excessive Brake Dust & Squeaky Brakes!

Hello again! I have a 1990 Geo Prizm LSI. The front brakes produce way too much dust. They also make a LOUD high pitched squeaking noise while braking. I spray the brakes down a few times each week. Lots of black dust washes out. After washing, the squeaking goes away for 10-20 miles depending on the amount of braking. I have applied disc brake quiet three times with these pads. The squeaking goes away for about a week. I am looking for a permanent solution. These pads still have quite a bit of life left. Should I chuck these and get ceramic pads? I have never had this problem on my Blazer or any other car. Thanks!

did you buy your pads from AutoZone? These are great pads that you will feel the differance when you step on your brake pedal and the make little or no dust.
Your Part number is ACT 242

Re: Excessive Brake Dust & Squeaky Brakes!

I had bought the car from my brother. He had done the pads about three months before I got it. He got the semi-metallic "economy" pads from Napa. Advance has ceramic pads for $40. I have never used ceramic pads before, heard good things though. So if I swap to ceramic pads, no more dust and embarrassing squeaking?

Sounds like you might got a bad set or did the guy give you the super cheap set. If he did those do squeal and your wheels stay black with dust. I would jerk them off and take them back.

He got the cheap set. He did the front brakes back in Feb. He said that they would produce too much dust and squeak really bad. He too had reapplied disc brake quiet several times. I'm considering spending the extra $ to get ceramic pads.

Re: Excessive Brake Dust & Squeaky Brakes!

Sounds like a good idea. I hate squealing brakes and even worst if they are mine. Makes you want to look around at the light like you are trying to see who's car it is making a noise so no one will know it's your's. Get them good ones and throw away those cheap 'uns.

Re: Excessive Brake Dust & Squeaky Brakes!

All ceramic brake pads are not the same.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...me&btnG=Search

NAPA and Pep Boy's do sell the same Raybestos pads. Ceramic technology is still being perfected and improved. Akebono has maintained the leading technology that has pressured lagging major domestic brake lining manufactues to market the best they have been able to develope. Read a bit and be sure and ask the owner's of NAPA'S and Advance Auto how their ceramic pads are working. I asked and they recommended older non ceramic pads because they have had fewer complaints than from users of the ceramic pads they are selling. Primary complaint being that they don't stop very well under some conditions. Poor stopping performance when put on used rotors and some times glaizing up brand new rotors.

Re: Excessive Brake Dust & Squeaky Brakes!

Take the pads back. If defective you can return them easily.

Just get another manufacturer and make sure you apply brake quiet on the back of the pads.
