check engine light after replacing starter?

im having a little problem with my 94 passport (3.2 automatic 139.000 miles 4wd).after replacing the starter(a royal pain as anybody thats done one would know).well i took the car for a test drive and had no problems local.but when i took her on the highway the check engine light came on(never had this problem before).after i turn the ignition off the light stays off until im back on the highway.i did have to do a lot of banging to drop the exhaust system im just wondering if i may have damaged the 02 sensor?this seem possible.i did try and follow the directions for checking the codes.but i cant find the data link connector.and i dont even know what it looks like.i know its says its located behind the lower front of the instrument panel.but i dont see anything that looks like the ones i remember from gm cars.i dont see anything as a matter of fact just some wires.if im missing something just set me straight.or if possible a pic or diagram would be real helpfull.
thanks a bunch
