Question 1990 Grand Am.. Having some slight issues

I have just recieved a free 1990 Grand Am. However, I am having a slight problem with it. When it gets above 65 mph the car seems to shake. There is no problems at any speed less than 65. There really isn't that much loss of control of the car but I have an idea it is just an alignment problem. Could that be what it is? or Possibly a motor mount for the car? I ask because I have never had this situation happen before with any type of car that I've owned so I am pretty much green to this whole thing. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you are still checking for answers... I had the same problem. Turned out that the left half axle was slightly bent. A non-dealer shop replaced it for a total cost of about $400 if I remember correctly. That fixed the problem. Smooth sailing since.

sounds stupid but check your rear tires. if the bands are broke they can do that.

I would suggest getting your tires balanced first! Any tire problems might be caught while balancing.

400 seems high to me! It should only be 1 hour of labor and you can buy whole axles for less than 100 dollars at most parts stores!

Re: 1990 Grand Am.. Having some slight issues

I just got the same exact car and I had the same problem, and had to replace the lft front wheel baring, got new tires, and it still does it up to about 72 mph, so I'm going to take it this payday and get the allignment. But thats what it sounds like to me, Allignment, however, you would want new tires before you did that, and yes, They would have to be ballanced.

Usually an Alignment will not cause a Vibration unless There is something bent. I.E. Axle Shaft. Flatrater is right 1st Step have The balance checked on your tires, and have them look everthing over, for loose parts or tire issues.
