We have a 95 blazer with the torque converter getting very hot, have just changed front seal and it is still leaking (not while standing still, but while driving). Have read some basic info on web about overheated torque converters being caused by the solenoid being filled with debris, also worn TCC regulator valve. Can anyone give us some suggestions of what to check to figure out what's wrong ourselves?

there is a hole in the pump body that removes high pressure. at work i drill that out cause if it doesnt dump enough fluid then i blows out the front deal. id hate to say it but you might have a pump problem. while your at it you should just change the converter too for one it overheated and your lockup clutchs might be bad and two check the converter hub cause if it has a nick on it, it will wear the front seal and the front bushing in the bell housing which will leak too

The 95's had a PWM converter lock-up strategy. The TCC valve on these trannies commonly wore out and caused a no lock-up condition. You need to get it on a trans capable scanner and see what its doing. You have to scan and read the codes and see if something is popping up. Basicly, you have to see if the transmission is working like it should be.

Is the transmission shifting through all the gears as it should be? More importantly how is the 1-2 shift is it smooth, or is it a bumpy/hard shift? If your convertor is getting hot and/or overheating, chances are its not locking up as it is suppose to. Drivng it like this for any length of time will damage the transmission.

As for the seal leak, if its leaking there and you replaced the seal. Could be that the converter shaft is damaged and causing a leak. It could be a restricted oil gallery causing excessive pressure behind the seal. The early 80's 4l60/700R4(whatever you want to call them) had that oil drain back problem like BlackTeg mentioned, but I have never seen one on the newer trannies before.

That front seal leak could probablly be fixed by replacing the seal and the bushing right behind it.
The worn TCC regulator valve can be fixed with a reman'd valve body or it can be fixed by a transmission shop with the Sonnax repair kit/tools. I had luck with a reman'd VB I bought on Ebay.
