When I get above 43 mph my truck starts to jerk. If I shift to D from OD, the problem goes away. The problem takes about a mile to develop and disappears when everything is well heated up (usually after 15-20 miles). The other lower gears are all behaving normally.

Might this be a case of the torque converter clutch locking and unlocking? or is there an actual 4th gear and I'm shifting up and down between 3rd and 4th? A fluid problem? THere are no codes set.

History: The transmission was replaced with a rebuild a year ago at 180000 miles by the dealer. I believe it has a 3 yr warranty on it. There is about 6000 miles on the rebuild.

#1-Check fluid level. Even if you see no leaks, it could be going into the transfer case.

There is an actual fourth gear range (0.70 overdrive) PLUS a locking clutch in the torque converter which adds another measure of drive, almost like a fifth range. Since the operation in DRIVE does not exhibit the problem, yet still allows the lockup of the torque converter clutch, the problem is not likely with the torque converter. There may be a problem with the OD sprag slipping, since it is only active on OD. Since you have warranty on the transmisson, you should probably report the problem to the dealer.

Reading the dip stick the best I could, I put 3 quarts of fluid into the transmission. It fixed my jerking problem. I think I could add more but I just can't read the dipstick that well. SO now the next question....why is the fluid leaking into the transfer case and is it harmfull if I don't address it right away?

There is a seal in the rear of the main transmission housing. Your's is probably leaking. The transmission oil is more likely to be accumulating in the adapter housing, and not entering the transfer case itself. That's not to say that it cannot enter the transfer case, but it probably isn't there just yet. If the transfer case oil is more red than green, it probably has some trans oil in it.

To repair the leaking seal, the drive shafts and transfer case need to be removed. When you remove the transfer case, expect to find about 3 quarts of ATF in the adapter housing. The transmission rear housing extension/adapter must be removed. With those parts out of the way you can see the seal:



Unfortunately, with the AWD and 4WD variants, the seal is part of the low-reverse clutch hub seal (at least it was on mine), and to replace it would require removal and disassembly of the transmission (been there). Before you go that far, it may be worth changing trans oil and adding seal conditioner, or better yet, switching to synthetic trans oil to help soften the seals again. Of course, you'll want to check the fluid level regularly, like all other fluid levels.

hello i have a 1988 s-10 4cyl 5 speed. last sat night i went to pick a friend up and when i was returning back home it felt like it slipped out of gear. got it back into gear and brought it home. put in neutral and let out on the clutch and it was still in gear.finally got it out of gear and it wont go back into any gear. checked the cluch fluid level and filled it, and still nothing. not sure if the ole 5 speed bit the dust or not. it will not go back into any gear at all. checked the slave and it is still engauging the clutch in and out. not sure what to do...............
