Good News About Import of GTR/GTS!!frankhou77 08-21-2002, 05:17 PM This only applies to 1990-1999 Skyline GTR and GTS. I have spent several hours doing research on the Skyline GTR/GTS and how to import this vehicle. At fist, it seemed that Motorex (http://www.motorex.net) was the only RI able to import that vehicle. Motorex is not the only company that has done the required crash tests. I am not located in California and I have a local RI here in Houston. I had email DOT requesting information regarding the importation of the GTR. Well, I got a call back on the phone and they informed me that the car has been approved by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov) . When I asked what this ment, they explained to me that I dont have to give them a copy of the crash tests results since the vehicle was already approved. Again, at that moment I could not help it to :silly2: You can see a copy of the report here NHTSA-99-5507 (http://dms3000.dot.gov/docimages/pdf35/53851_web.pdf) (Acrobat Reader) (http://cgim.adobe.com/acrobat/reader19/download.cgi?JustSendFile=Y&SearchCB=Y) I was told also that this means that any RI can do the modifications. (If they know how to) May I recomend that you purchase this vehicle from England if you are in Central or East coast due to the fact that you can get this vehicle imported in the price range of about $700-1400 depending on the carrier. It takes 3 weeks to get the vehicle imported. I checked this website Fish 4 (http://www.fish4cars.co.uk) for prices and availability of the GTR in England. I am still scheduled to talk to DOT tomorow regarding further information about this and I will post that here. frankhou77 08-21-2002, 07:20 PM Since the vehicle still has to be converted. I called an RI and talked with him about this. He recomended to me that I look into perhaps getting an older vehicle. The vehicles made after 1996 are required to have a OBD2 (http://www.obd2.com/) (On board diagnostic) wish can make a difference on the price of the conversion. (If they know how to) That's the tricky part, they don't. More on this in www.FreshAlloy.com racing4thesun 09-05-2002, 03:03 AM What does RI stand for and who should I call about getting the conversion done because I live in washington state. Thansks SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 03:29 AM Registered Importer(sp) That is cool info, thanks. I am an in England by the way. What car do you want:D SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 03:30 AM I can do an OBDII conversion. :D SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 03:31 AM I can buy the cars here, do the mods for you and ship the cars out, how does that sound? racing4thesun 09-05-2002, 04:30 PM How much for a conversion to U.S. leagal standards for say a pre 96 Gtr? Proferbably a R33. The price for the car and mods and shipping. Thanks SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 05:11 PM I am kidding, well maybe. If the car costs 28k, its going to take 4-5k in parts, a few weeks to get the car done, ship it to the states, customs 1 1/2 times the price of the car when its shipped, RI, DOT, Highway Safety, your still looking at 40k, plus the up front money to get the car into the states. What I was getting at, is I can do all the electronics, lights, air bag, cats, and what ever else, but there are other variables. Its not that cut and dry, for heaven sake its the Gov't were are talking about. If some of you guys want me to, I can do some of the work. I'll go buy one, and see how long it takes me, but I will need a part source for the OBDII stuff. I will have to do some research as well, of course. Its not just like swapping out computers.:p SkylineUSA 09-05-2002, 05:15 PM I think I could get it down to 35k, but I would wait a few months to see if that other company Gonthrax was talking about can actually start selling them. If so, you probably will see the R33 drop down to a more affordable 30k-35k. I will buy mine here, do the mods, and then ship it back. I want to learn about what makes them tick, before I come back, and start a garage. :D Gonthrax 09-06-2002, 11:28 PM Interesting info, now what really confuses me is why no other RI will do the compliencing... I mean are they under the impression that they can't because motorex has been running around telling everyone that if they wanna complience skylines they have to crash test? Now I'm going to look into it, and (heres a little bit for the lawyers) should I find that Motorex was incorrect in touting itself as the only RI capable of compliencing Skylines, if they do indeed make that statement, which I think they do they will be getting nasty letters from lawyers. And no, this is not liable, this is not a threat so :finger: Sean, if you still browse through here ;) SkylineUSA 09-07-2002, 06:16 AM Thats an easy question, most of the RIs already have their market, and they are not going to go through the hassle of spending all that more time and money to make the same amout on a car they already know how to modify, and make it compliant. At least that would be my take on it, if I was an owner of a RI. Its all business and profit driven, the American Way:D brucelee 09-14-2002, 04:32 AM  Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
