Speaking of mileage increases.

For the past two weeks I've been averaging 19.2 MPG on my work commutes. This is an increase from about 17 MPG. I actually thought there was something wrong with my gas guage because I'm use to it reading 1/2 full at 150-160 miles and now I'm suddenly going 190-200 miles at 1/2 tank. The only thing that has changed is that I removed my tire from the back, but I can't imagine it would make that much of a difference. Weird! One of my Xterra mysteries I guess!

You lucky sumbitch

You're getting 200 miles out of a half-tank? I'm jealous. The best I get is about 165-170, usually less.

That's an indicated half tank, but usually I only get 150-160 miles at that point. Just the past couple weeks have seen the higher mileage and that's why I questioned my guage at first. After filling up though and only putting about 10 gallons in, my mileage increase was confirmed. Looks like this tank isn't going to go as far, but I won't know for a few days. As a side note, it seems like my truck is running better, but there is no logical explanation for anything. It has 40K miles on it now, so I doubt it's just breaking in!

His spare is on a rear tire carrier, but I still have to wonder. Old post, maybe something else.

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Since it's reopened, might as well chime in. I get maybe 200 miles on a whole tank.

I don't feel so bad for getting 320-360 to a tank anymore.

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Cruise control and 55mph, it gets 25 mpg. 60mph it goes down to 22, and forget it after 70. That was last summer, with stock flat trail tires and summer gas. Winter is different, last tank I got 19 with winter formulated gas and bfg at's.

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

while we are on the subject, i jsut got my frontier crew cab, and its supposed to be the 19 cgallon tank. well the "HEY GET GAS, ASS"light was on and it only took 14.5 gallons to fill 'er up. just wondering if anyone else has had that same wierdness.im guessing that the sensor is a littl FUBAR .

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Of course it's going to come on a few gallons before the tank is empty. Who cares when it does, how about just looking at the needle like people have been doing for decades?

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Wow. Talk about sarcasm... Don't mind him, he tends to get cranky when someone asks a common question. It's possible the sending unit is off a bit, the float arm might be bent, bunch of other things. Drive it for a bit and get a feel for how far you can go on a tank of gas and take it from there. My fuel light comes on with about 2 gallons left in the tank, but on my last car the light came on with less than a gallon. I'd rather have a longer warning.

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Thank you.
i realize that the light will come on when u got some left in the tank, my point was that i doubt it owuld do it with 5 gallons remaining.
what ill prolly do is get a gallon can and run until im completely out just to see exactly what im getting. at the moment im at about 280 miles on this tank and the light isnt on yet so i figure about 20-30 more. so call it about 300 miles to a tank which is pretty good apparently.i think ima get that complete gumout thing done this weekend too.

Re: Speaking of mileage increases.

Miles per tank is a pointless measure. Miles per gallon is the correct measure. Fill it, burn 3/4 tank, fill again, divide miles since last fill by gallons to refill and you have the answer.
