Rpm Idle Read 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport

This Jeep I just got when hot 210 Degs. is turning 750 rpm on the tack or 2nd short line at idle constantly. Let foot off of brake and she pulls herself along.
Is this to high? Jeep runs great other than that.

The numbers look right...but mine doesn't take off on it own....
Use an external tach...to verify actual speed.

Appreciate the comeback. I will shortly before long have the coolant system flushed and car winterized and at that time I,l mention it to be cked by our garage people. Possibly car tack is reading a little low.

we had to take my wife,s car off the road because of a blown head gasket .
1992 Acclaim. Wasn,t worth fixing bottom too rusted out so we junked it.
I picked up this Cherokee yesterday . Also the battery in the Cherokee is ok but I don,t know how old the battery is.
Just so happens the brand new interstate battery I bought for the acclaim
before we junked it will drop right into the Cherokee if needed according to the book. Also this battery has 700cca. Just a stroke of luck.

Thanks, longfellow

Sounds OK to me too. If I'm on a level surface and select D, I'll start creeping forward too.

Saundade,
When you engage drive in transmission' does she engage gears hard because of idle rpm? Mine does, is this normal. Reverse on my vehicle sounds ok but drive eng. seems to hard on gears.

Well, I'm not sure by what you mean by "hard", but I'd say no. Going from Neutral to Drive is pretty smooth. Going from Rev into drive somtimes give me a "clunk" but not a very loud one.

yes that,s what i mean' a clunk.

rev. engages ok but drive seems to rough to me. rpm in idle is around 750.

now i,ve been running constant a/c , maybe mtr. is supposed to do this because of added load from a/c. hmmmm interesting. :uhoh:

2000 Grand with 4.0, mine will creep forward, even up an incline, at idle. I think that the torque converters in these are designed to give you power at lower rpms...rock crawling speeds.

My concern is not on dry roads but what if during the winter when your stopped behind somebody at a intersection light. Even with foot on brake this higher idle may push you into car ahead of u. This is on packed snow or ice surface roads.

Foot on brake! If the wheels won't turn you can't creep forward, just about whatever the road condition.

Uh.. you may want to think about what you just wrote. If you keep your foot on the brake, you won't go anywhere.

If you're that concerned, put it into neutral.

Now Fred there,s such a thing as the wheels could ski on the road surface even though their not turning. where I live' winter can be crazy conditions.

Hopefully weight of eng. on front tires wouldn,t allow this.

?? You are talking about a skid, which would be a result of you carrying too much speed coming up to the light. This is quite different than what you were talking about with the vehicle creeping forward in gear.

Always remember that 4wd helps you go, but doesn't necessarily help you stop.

Getting back to the orginal question, if you think the idle is too high, try lowering it a little (maybe 20-25 rpm). Do this, clean throttle body with throttle body cleaner, and the check and set plate gap to .0015-002 gap. Then check for leaks at PCV system, the hoses tend to get hard and draw air into the intake.
