Slip-yoke replacement

I have a 2001 silverado with a wonderful knocking noise. I've already been to a shop and they say its the slip-yoke at the transfer case. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how hard it would be to replace it?

Re: Slip-yoke replacement

XdigityX,

I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 2x4 and I am having the same problem. Sometimes when I shift out of park into drive or reverse I have the same knocking sound coming from the transmission. I also have the same sound when I have to make a hard stop. I also have a slip feeling coming from the transmission area. My father-in-law works for a GM dealership in Kansas and he has been researching this for me by talking to the Lead Mechanic and Service Manager. They all come up with the slip yoke being the culprit. I should be hearing from him sometime this week and I will relay further information to you.

Welcome to AF, this thread looks a little old, may not be being looked at now. BTW, there is a special lube for that slip yoke used to prevent it's binding, unless the problem is wear of course.

Re: Slip-yoke replacement

maxwedge,

Thank you for that information. I don't know a lot about vehicles or the maintanence there of. I will follow up with the lead and hopefully get this figured out.
