Cool 2000 Sportage Check Engine light

Hi Everyone. I've owned this Kia for a year - no problems what-so-ever. The past week it's been running a tad sluggish on acceleration. It's been incredibly hot, so I didn't know it was related - I checked all fluids a couple of days ago & everything was fine.

I got a check engine light this morning when trying to leave the driveway - and my Kia seemed to hesitate - exactly when the light came on.

Yes, I will take it in for diagnostics, but is there a couple of things in general that crap out first - like the most common things to go. I just don't want to get blind sided when I get the results back from the diagnostics. It's run perfectly for the past year. I think I have about 83,000 miles on the car now.

Thanks!!
Karen

UPDATE!

Ok, I tanked up with fuel later in the day, accelerated really fast onto the highway and the check engine light went out. Maybe I need something cleaned out, maybe I just got crappy fuel on the last tank full??

if it comes back on go to autozone and get the code pulled and we may be able to tell you what it is. just because the light went out dont mean the problem is fixed.

I've heard Autozone does the testing for free, is this correct?

Yeah....mine used to do exactly that in same scenario....and code revealed an emission control problem....evaporative control valve....but the CEL used to return to normal after a few cycles....I have not done anything yet to correct this freak problem....however it did not reappear after I corrected a failed spark plug that had degraded into a severe no-go problem.
