1998 camry I4 fuel filter, in line filter?
I decided to change my fuel filter out due to decreasing gas mileage and low high rpm power (should i replace fuel pump for this also?). Picked up a filter from pep boys. Pulled the one in the car out, and its not the same filter as the one i got bought. The one from pep boys (that they looked up for me) looks like an in line filter. So before i curse at them some more for making me waste 1/2 an hour and a quart of gas (didn't empty the line before i unpluged it), is there another fuel filter on the car that I don't know about?
Where can I get the fuel filter I need, other than Toyota dealer?
Anyone wanting to change their fuel filter on this model, all you need is a 8mm socket with at lease a short extension (a deep socket might be long enough), something to pry with (read flathead screwdriver), and about 1/2 hour of time...and the right filter
btw, what is that black sticky stuff all around the cover?

Alright, so I got smart and went to Autozone.com and looked it up, which I should have done to begin with. So the fuel filter is below the brake booster.
New question, why are there two fuel filters?

Where are you finding the second filter? I'm only aware of the one one the firewall below the brake booster.
I doubt you fuel pump has a problem. The symptoms you describe sound more like a basic tuneup is required. How are the plugs and wires? Any corrosion around the connections at the coils? Poor ignition will hurt your mileage and power, especially at higher RPMs.

Under my rear seat, inside the gas tank. It it attached to the same assembly as the fuel pump and strainer. At least the service manual I have (sticked to the top of this forum) says its a fuel filter.

That's more of a strainer. That gets replaced/cleaned if and when the fuel pump gets replaced. I wouldn't worry about that item. After you check out the ignition and you still believe you have a fuel problem, your best bet is to get the fuel pressure checked. That is done by connecting a special banjo bolt adapter to the inlet of the fuel filter then connecting a gauge to the adapter.

For some Toyotas, the replacement fuel filter is lifetime warrantied and may not cost much more than your local chain autoparts stores. Some dealers also give discounts to AAA members.
What effects fuel economy?
Tire pressure.
Air/fuel mixture.
Driving conditions and habits.
Is your car tuned properly.
Bad fuel lines and connections.
Did you check for any codes?

Re: 1998 camry I4 fuel filter, in line filter?

I changed the one by the brake booster, confused as to why there are two.
I read about suggestions for NGK Plat. plugs, any suggestions on (economical) wires?
On a side note, my dad wants plugs on his Lexus RX300 changed. That forum is pretty dead, so thought I'd ask here. Anyone knwo if those plugs are easy to get to once the cover on the engine is taken off?

Re: 1998 camry I4 fuel filter, in line filter?
As you can see the "fuel pump filter" is really a strainer. It should never need servicing prior to fuel pump replacement.
I believe the engine used in that Lexus is the same as the V-6 Camry. The rears are a bear to get to but it can be done with the right combination of extensions and swivels. You kind of make it up as you go along.

Agreed that the 'fuel pump filter' is just a strainer. The other filter that i was talking about is the one labeled 'fuel filter', with the boxed in label. That actually looks like a filter. I'm still confused as to why its there.
Thanks for the info on the rx. Now i gotta go get a really long extension for my car, and a swivel for his
