2001 Lumina Front end rattle

Anyone ever heard of a front lower spring seat bearing causing a rattle felt on bumps at slow speeds or series of bumps at moderate speeds. At highway speeds there is no rattle heard. Turning the wheel stop to stop is smooth with no sound heard. This rattle can be felt in the floorboard. I have replaced contol arm bushings and bolts, ball joints, sway arm bushings and halfshafts. Also, the hub and bearing assembly on the right side which is where the rattle is occurring.

Welcome Aboard!

Sounds like you're down to the strut, strut mount, and tie rod end. I suppose a missing rubber isolator under the spring could make noise, but the knocking on light to moderate bumps sounds more like it would be an upper strut mount. You have to completely unload the suspension to check for play and wear there.

Thumbs up Re: 2001 Lumina Front end rattle

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the tie rod ends and there is no play there. Guess I will replace the upper strut mount, isolator and lower spring seat and bearing. Only thing that has been holding me back from that job is the weather. Just to darn hot here to tackle a job like that now. I will endure the rattle till cooler weather. Thanks again. I will let you know the outcome.

Re: 2001 Lumina Front end rattle

Before you order up a load of parts from the NAPA truck, raise the front end and support it with the tires about 4-5" off teh pavement. Place a very long bar or about 8 feet of 2x4 under one of the front wheels so you can raise and lower it slightly. Open the hood, observe the upper mount, and lift/lower the wheel using your prybar. You may have to remove the upper mount covers to see the strut rod and nut. If you see more than about 1/2" of vertical movement in the strut stem and nut before the resistance becomes serious, you may have loose upper mounts. The rubber will allow some movement, but about 1/2" is the limit.
