Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
Hello,
Anyone have any ideas for me about getting an oil pan out of this 5speed 4x4? I have tried six ways from Sunday to jack, rejack and jack some more on the engine, only to fall short on getting the pan out the rear or front. Chilton's say's jack by the pulley and remove oil pan. Yeah right, if only it were that easy. I have the pan down, along with oil pump, but can't seem to fit it out the back because the tranny is in the way. I need atleast an inch more. With the under frame and tranny, just not enough room. I've got 2x4's in the mounts(and I jacked as high as I could go until it lifted the truck), 1'' piece of wood holding tranny up from mount(tried jacking tranny up too, but no luck), unbolted the windshield wiper motor to make room for the EGR to go up more, unhooked starter, bent fan shield away and STILL I can't find the extra space to get the pan out. I'm so frustrated I had to stop and seek help. Please, someone tell me how this S.O.B. is supposed to come out of there!
Sincerely frustrated and dirty to boot!

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
I know you dont want to hear this, but on alot of vehicles its quicker and easier to pull the motor, and hang it on a stand where you can get to things easily. Some pans will come off without too much trouble, some are a real booger, and some are almost impossible. With what youve already done, with a few more bolts and fuel lines and wires, youd be ready to pull it. In the time youve already spent trying to get the pan off, you could have probably had it out, done the repairs, and be putting it back. I never did like rolling around on my back getting oil in my eyes , to me its simpler pulling em most of the time.

I hear what your saying, but I don't want to do that. It'd be alot more work than I already have in it to this point. There really is alot more to come off in order to pull the engine, plus you need a cherry picker. I'm stuck with what I got and trying to pry it out somehow, but thanks for the words. If it were my truck, I mighta pulled it.

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
I haven't done this on a 94 F-150, but I have pulled oil pans that would hang up on the crankshaft counterweights unless the crank was carefully rotated. Once the crank was properly position there was adequate clearance.

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
Hey thanks for the tip, I got the same tip from another person last night too. I thought for sure it was the problem, but no such luck again today. The pan front was up against the block with no interference from the crank and still wouldn't slide out the back. I was lacking maybe 1-2 inches. Had tranny mount disconnected and front end up on jackstands and motor jacked up as far as I could push it, but there just was not enough room to slide it out either way. Gosh, I feel like I'm doing something wrong here, but what more could there be? I tried every way I could think of to get this thing up and still had no luck. I really wish the crank tip was the problem, but I'm still searching for something else to try. Anymore ideas?

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
I may be out of ideas....I have an '03 F-350 4X4. After looking under it, I see that there is a skid plate below the oil pan. Removing four bolts would get that out of the way. I might get a couple of inches clearance above the axle (monobeam type) if I unbolted the front or rear spring shackle. Of course this would mean supporting the truck by the frame and letting the wheels hang at full rebound.
I recently replaced an oil seal on a transfer case; at first it seemed impossible to access until I realized that taking the factory skid plate off (took about one minute) made everything accessible.
If you can't raise the engine farther, can you move/remove anything below to get more clearance?

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
No, there isn't any skid plate to remove. It's all open and accessible. Under the pan is the lower frame which is not going anywhere and above, the engine. Just behind is the tranny. The pan was all the way up in the front and still not clearing the back, by more than an inch. I tried setting the truck up by the frame under the doors so the wheels hung and still no better. Everything I tried failed. It's a real thinker for me, since I've never had this kind of a problem before. I hate the manuals, they make it sound real easy. I think It'd be easier to roll it off a cliff!

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
have you tried removing the trans mount and let the tail drop a little and then lift the engine a little more. wasnt sure if that might get you that little bit that you need.

Re: Help! 94 F-150 oil pan removal...
You know, I gave up on that one. I just wasn't making any progress. A relative worked on it for 6 hours and got the pan off. I asked how they did it and they said to unhook the trans mount (I did) and lift the whole trans and transfer case up all the way till you thought you couldn't anymore (which I thought I did). I had the bolts off the trans mount and lifted about 1 1/2 inches above the bolt slots, but still couldn't get it. They took the EGR off too, which I didn't. I opted to move the windshield wiper motor instead and apparently it just wasn't enough room. The combo of trans/transfer jacking and hoisting the engine till it couldn't go no more with the EGR removed, did the trick. Honestly, I'm just glad I didn't have to work on it anymore. But I'm a lil smarter for next time.......which will be a long time I hope! Thanks for your advice, these forums are great for getting that little bit of extra help needed when in a jam!
